Q: Where are you going to school and what do you plan on studying?
A: I am going to Virginia Commonwealth University (Go Rams!). I am going to study kinetic imaging, which is just a fancy word for animation, although it sounds like a health major.
Q: Why did you choose this school?
A: I know this sounds cliché but when I stepped on campus I knew that this school was right for me, the atmosphere felt really creative and energetic, and I love the city of Richmond. It’s also the number one public university in the nation for art, so I am guaranteed a good education in my field.
Q: What inspired you to go into this field?
A: I’ve always been into art, film and graphic design but it wasn’t until I watched an animated short called “Johnny Express” that I wanted to go into animation specifically. After watching this short and a bunch of others and diving into the production of animation, I started asking questions such as “How do I get to do that?” I’ve always known I wanted to go into an art field but I didn’t know which one until the day I watched that film. I’ve always loved Marvel movies and Pixar productions.
Q: What are your dreams and hopes for the future?
A: Well first off, I wanted to graduate from VCU, after have four long, successful, informational years. Next, I want to movie to the West coast, specifically San Francisco to work for Pixar or another big name animation company. I want to be apart of major film productions, and I eventually want to do free-lance short films. But, I do not know exactly what the future holds.
Q: What advice can you give to other high school students interested in the art fields?
A: Your family and friends might tell you that there are no jobs, which is scary, but do what is best for you. There are jobs out there, but you need to work for them. There are plenty of great schools to study at. Do what makes you happy, and if that is art, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
