From big, fluffy dogs to small, scaly snakes, pets become part of the family. They can be companions for the elderly, playmates for children and entertainment for everyone. Whether people get a pet for comfort or to stay busy, many are unaware of the mental and physical health benefits that are gained from owning a pet.
Stress is a major factor that takes a toll on the overall health of the human body. Caring for a pet is an easy way to reduce stress, which can also lead to a healthier heart. According to the National Institute of Health, pet owners display decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels– which can minimize the risk of having a heart attack later in life.
The sense of companionship that is provided by pets brings feelings of happiness, instantly boosting the owner’s mood. Numerous hospitals and nursing homes have animal-assisted therapy programs which allow dogs to visit patients and share their affection. “I fractured my skull and got my pup as a therapy dog. He laid with me when I got head pains and made it a more bearable experience,” said freshman Anna Grace Keller.
Pets can even act as social magnets by connecting people through the love of animals. Interacting with new people is a healthy way to form relationships, and pets are a great way to begin a conversation. Taking a trip to the dog park or starting a conversation in the fish food aisle of the pet store are both ways to meet new friends by already having something in common with them.
Owning a pet is highly beneficial to children by teaching them responsibility early in life. Simple tasks like feeding the guinea pig or brushing the cat sets the path for bigger responsibilities as the kids grow older. Growing up with a pet also helps children be more capable of empathy towards others because they have learned to nurture their animal at a young age.
Adopting or purchasing a pet at a local pet store will benefit both you and your new companion. With less stress, happier moods and new relationships, taking care of a pet improves the owner’s overall comfort in life and provides the animal with a good home, affection and a life-long best friend.
