For decades, Severna Park has been known as a lacrosse powerhouse throughout the state of Maryland. Winning thirteen class 4A MPSSAA State Championships since the program’s inception, the girls team has enjoyed success with a multitude of talented players. However, what sets Severna Park apart from other county girls lacrosse programs is how our players succeed at the Division One Level. The past four graduating classes have sent 32 players to college programs across the country.
These crazy figures resulted in our school being represented well at the Final Four in Philadelphia on Memorial Day Weekend, as two of the four teams competing had a Severna Park alumni on their roster. Erika Spilker, class of 2012, came off the bench for Penn State in their semifinal loss against North Carolina, and Morgan Torggler, class of 2013, led a Maryland defense to the championship game, where they also lost to North Carolina. Both Spilker and Torggler helped Severna Park win the MPSSA Class 4A State Championship in 2012, and they have continued to contribute to their collegiate teams’ success since then.
Although neither alumnus was able to lead their team to the NCAA Championship that UNC captured, both were able to make an impact for their team’s defensive units.
