Key Club annual fundraiser ‘Prom Fashion Show’ expected to be a big hit for both student body and March of Dimes
It’s hours before start time. Girls have agonized over their dresses. Their hair and makeup is finally just right. The boys have rented their tuxes, and are putting their final dollop of hair gel in. Isn’t it a little early for prom, you may ask? Well, yes, we’re about four months ahead of schedule, but the next best thing to prom is upon Severna Park: the annual Prom Fashion Show. Minus the dancing, this event is like the senior prom that follows it by 4 months– dresses, tuxse, hair, makeup, photos– but with little more in mind than simply looking your best. Models enjoy participating and dressing up for fun, but the real push behind this event is the donations to the organization March of Dimes. The Prom Fashion show is a yearly event put on by the Key Club, which organizes many other service projects throughout the year. This event is Key Club’s biggest and most successful fundraiser of them all.
March of Dimes helps premature babies and their family during times of struggle, providing donations as well as putting money into research and development. All the money raised from Prom Fashion show is given to this organization on behalf of the Key Club, as well as all of the businesses that donated. The actual “fashion show” features a pair of models strutting down the runway in their fresh outfits as an MC introduces them. At the event there are also themed baskets either donated by businesses or put together by key club members. The baskets are raffled off to the audience members who pay for a raffle ticket. The willingness of local vendors to participate and donate to an event shows that this event is more than just about fashion or Severna Park High school, it’s about involving the whole community to do their part in helping those less fortunate. To make the night even more special, the Key Club organizes for a March of Dimes representative to give a short speech in order to let the audience know what their organization is all about, and the purpose of the audience donations: to help the babies and their families. This emotional anecdote really hits everyone in attendance with the sentiment that although Prom Fashion show is a super fun night filled with glam and glitz, it’s also a night that can change families’ lives and make a huge impact on our community.
Advisors for the Key Club, teachers Mrs. Stahl and Mrs. Meadows work tirelessly to make sure the night is pulled off without a hitch, working out the mechanics, and assisting the student committee in any way they can. There is a multitude of volunteers needed to make this event spectacular, including the models, decorating committee, MC’s, photographer, concessions and many more. The Key Club also continues to be extremely thankful for the continued support of local businesses who donate their services like hair and makeup, rental dresses, and limousine service to make the evening as fun as possible. The co-chairs of this event are Margaret Galdi and Kylie Lally, both seniors who are Key Club members and have volunteered with the event in previous years. When asked why she wanted to run Prom Fashion Show this year, Lally said “I thought running Prom Fashion Show would be a fun way to help out but also a fun way to be social with everyone. For me, the fact that such a fun event goes to such a great cause is what makes it really amazing!”
If you aren’t already involved in some way, head on over to the SPHS auditorium on Friday January 15 at 7PM in order to witness a night full of fun and glam, as well as compassion and dedication to the community.
