Barbara and Chip Elgert, parents of the late Severna Park Superfan Kenny Elgert, stand together sharing what they believe shall be done letting the kids play. Kenny passed away early this past year and has left a mark on Severna Park Athletics. “I feel that with sports coming back, it will see as a sign of victory that we can still live a somewhat normal life during the pandemic,” junior Aidan Milewski said.

The student parking lot is almost empty most days because of virtual learning. School staff has started to return to the building and the parking lots are slowly filling up.

Mental health in schools has become more prevalent over the years. In 2019 the Our Minds Matter Movement was founded by students to help make mental health resources in and out of school accessible for students. SPHS sophomore Cooper Powell has participated in the movement for a while now and has seen how much change and progress it has created in the community and in himself. “This organization has made many people who live here, including myself, feel more comfortable when discussing mental health and personal struggles,” Powell said.

Dr. Karen B. Salmon, State Superintendent orders schools to remain closed until April 24, 2020. In response, Mr. George Arlotto the Superintendent of Schools sent out a letter which explained a formalized way of online learning. “Google Classroom and Google Meet [are] two tools that will be critical for our distance learning efforts,” Arlotto said.

Donut Shack has reopened and citizens of Severna Park are eager to sink their teeth into the delicious treats. The grand reopening was a huge success for the business. “I waited in line for over 40 minutes,” Stephanie Brenneman said.
