15.3 percent of all deaths of persons 10-24 in Anne Arundel County in 2013 were suicides. 16.9 percent of Anne Arundel County teenagers in grades 9-12 reported seriously considering suicide in 2013. Suicide or thoughts of suicide can be caused by a number of factors, including alcohol or drug abuse, history of depression or a mental illness, continued stress and suicidal behavior by others around you.
After hearing these statistics, the prevalence of suicide in our community may seem much more alarming. However, there are many things you can do to prevent such a terrible event from occurring in our community.
The first step is saying something.
If you notice someone talking about harming or killing themselves, ask if they are doing ok. Sometimes a little “good morning” or “you look nice today” can go a long way in helping someone who may be struggling. If you are considering suicide, be aware that many resources are available for you.
The Suicide Hotline
If you are ever alone, and cannot reach help face to face with another person, call the suicide hotline: The number is 1(800) 273-8255. The line is available 24 hours a day. The line offers support, and someone to talk to.
Parents
Even if you do not tell your parents about other personal problems, talk to them if you are considering suicide. They can assist you in finding other resources such as therapists and psychologists to help you. It may be hard, but it is important to tell those close to you so that they can help you.
Guidance Counselors
Here at school, the best available resource to help you is the guidance office. Even though many students do not talk openly with their guidance counselors, they will be able to help you in ways. By giving you references to more qualified people and helping you find solution options
Therapists
If you need outside help, go see a therapist. Sometimes, having someone that isn’t family listen to you is the most helpful thing. Also, being able to admit something in 100 percent confidentiality may take a very large weight off your chest, helping you feel better almost instantly. If you are having suicidal thoughts or know someone that is having suicidal thoughts, HELP IS OUT THERE FOR YOU. Do not be afraid to talk to someone, there is always hope and you are surrounded by a community of people who care about you.
