Severna Park field hockey has been successful on many levels since its inception in 1975. With 23 state championships, a record unsurpassed by any other high school sports team in the state of Maryland, the program is always a strong contender for the top title. This year, perhaps, the pressure is on a bit more, as the Falcons seek their fourth straight state championship– a chance for the senior players to win each year of their careers. However, the seniors know what is at stake and they have been ready to assume the leadership role since the end of last season this past November.
Newly elected varsity team captains McKenna Lee and Ellie Schepens are ready to move the team to another level of success. “We were pushed by the generations before us that left this major legacy for us to pick up,” Lee said. “And for the girls under us, it’s about helping us carry that load.” Continued success at this level for this many years requires a complete team effort, from the varsity captain down to the last freshman. Each day the JV team and Varsity team practice together on the turf, cheering loudly and investing in each other to better both teams in the long run.
Even with the soaring expectations for the season, the Falcons will have their work cut out before playoffs. With this being the first season of the Anne Arundel and Howard counties cross-over scheduling, the team will face off against unfamiliar opponents like Marriott’s Ridge and Glenelg, two top teams in the state. Additionally, the Falcons will take on their strong county opponents in South River, Broadneck, Chesapeake, and Arundel. The team will also face the undisputed best team in Delaware, Cape Henlopen. With last year’s 7-6 record entering playoffs ending in a state championship, the girls know that record doesn’t matter entering playoffs, but experience does. The Falcons have one of the toughest schedule in the entire state, and it will only make them stronger by the time they enter the postseason. Senior midfielder Claire Domshick added, “We want to see as many things as possible during the season, so when it comes to playoffs we are as prepared as we can possibly be.”
