In a time of stress, pressure and tension dominating our school life, a group of students is working to change that dynamic through simple, random acts of kindness. The Random Acts of Kindness Club, a newly formed club at our high school, is on the mission to create a more positive, supportive, and compassionate environment here at SPHS. These students are organizing random acts of kindness to participate in charity events, the club encourages students to uplift one another though small random acts of kindness. Through their efforts, they hope to make kindness not occasional, but an everyday act throughout our school, friends and community.
The kindness club is a new club at SPHS. The creator of the club Anna Willis, has been taking on a great responsibility of making and running the meetings. This club is more than just a group that organizes charitable activities, it is a space where students take the initiative to make a difference in their peers. Her team meets regularly to brainstorm new ideas for spreading kindness throughout their school and community. Whether it’s planning a small act for the club members or making blankets for Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, this club is making a difference. “We made the blankets last year for them.” Said Anna Willis. “It was such a fun project that everyone loved, especially the kids receiving them.” The club is driven by a common shared belief that small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact, these student leaders ensure that the club remains inclusive, and welcoming for all grade levels to participate and contribute.
The kindness club has been quietly transforming the school’s atmosphere with the mission to spread kindness and positivity through the students and staff. Through simple gestures like friendship bracelets, gift bags for the nurses, decorating coffee cup holders for staff appreciation day, and thank you card making for your friends, classmates, and teachers, the club is focused on creating a culture of compassion. I love making people feel good about themselves, so these simple acts of kindness really make me happy, which rubs off on everyone else. Said Anna Willis, “I started this club to make a difference, to make people more happy and positive about themselves and others.”
The student-led club also organizes larger events such as volunteering at the Earth Day Festival at Earleigh Heights, and making blankets for Johns Hopkins Children Medical Center, allowing students to give back to the community. Not only do we do the small and simple acts, we try to do bigger things as well.” Said Anna Willis, I like to do volunteer work and things outside of school to help the community too. We can make a big difference in the school, but it takes a lot more time, effort and ideas to lift up a whole community, and I like the challenge. The club’s efforts have not only brought students closer together but have also inspired others to take actions.
As the school year has just begun, so has the kindness club. This club has no signs of slowing down. With plans to expand their reach and start working with more outside programs, the student leaders are excited about what the future holds. The students have seen kindness ripple through our school, they want to take this kindness beyond just our school. We have a lot of ideas for our meetings this year, big and small projects.” Said Anna Willis. “We want to also work in holiday activities like boo baskets for teachers! We also want to work with a nursing home and even do a canned goods collection for the shelter.” The club has sparked a wave of positivity, proving that even in a busy high school environment, kindness can thrive when students take the lead.
The Random Acts of Kindness Club here at SPHS has already made a lasting impact through a wide variety of actions, both big and small, that touch the lives of students, teachers, staff and the local community. From thoughtful cards and bracelets to volunteering at events, the club’s efforts have created a huge impact on everyone around them. Their outreach toward the future, the students are excited to expand their initiatives. Whether through small or large projects, the Random Acts of Kindness Club remains dedicated to spreading positivity and making a difference that will impact everyone.
