Saturday, March 1 marks the first day of tryouts for Severna Park High School’s varsity baseball team where returning seniors, Charlie Hartman and Adam Clark, come motivated to bring home the State Championship title once and for all.
Returning to second base Clark comes into his last high school baseball season with confidence that his teammates and coaches will make it a season to remember before continuing his baseball career at Beloit College.
Clark looks most forward to this season, “Teammates and hopefully success.”
Hartman comes into the season with hopes similar to Clark’s. “I am looking forward to the last ride with my fellow seniors and hopefully getting out there, win some games, and maybe win another county championship” Hartman said. Severna Park High School’s varsity baseball team’s 2024 record is 18 wins and 7 losses and it ranked 37 in the State of Maryland.
Clark and Hartman have been a part of many victories and have shared some of their favorite memories from their baseball season.
“I would say my favorite memory is beating Walt Whitman at the Regional Final my sophomore year. It was a good team and we took it to them” states Hartman. “Probably last year in the Regional Semifinals, that was just like the best game that we played all year. It was against James M. Bennett and we all just played super well, it was a good all-around game” Clark said.
Severna Park High School’s baseball team is not only about winning and bringing home trophies. It also creates an atmosphere where coaches and players inspire each other to be better people. This has shaped many students into the people they are today, including junior Jake Smulow.
“It’s allowed me to make new friends, meet new people, and improve as a person,” says Smulow.
Severna Park baseball’s team has created a community over the years which is shown through the varsity coaches, Coach Schiavone and Coach Milton. Coach Schiavone is going into his 13th season alongside Coach Milton, and these two coaches have a fascinating baseball career.
“I was a 1990 graduate of SPHS and played baseball. I went on to play at Salisbury University, Anne Arundel Community College, and finished up the last two years of my eligibility playing at The University of Maryland. At Maryland, I played with Eric Milton, our current Head Coach, who was a freshman when I was a senior” Coach Shiavonie said.
