Students at Severna Park High School have a variety of unique pets from chickens to horses.
Senior, Annika Saathoff has a horse, freshman, Lexi Grebb has horses and chickens and freshman, Gwen Macola has horses and chickens as well.
Saathoff has had her horse, Cooper, for five years and got him from Full Moon Farm in Southern Maryland. Saathoff had been riding horses for a few years, and thought a good next step would be to get her own. She believes that her horse isn’t super hard to care for and she recommends others to get a horse but not until they have done lots of research. “Horses are a big responsibility and if you decide to go to college, you need to figure out what you will do with your horse during that time.”
Saathoff also shared that her horse, Cooper, absolutely despises bananas, so anytime he eats one, he immediately spits it out.
Macola got her horse, Truth, in December as an early Christmas gift. Macola believes that her horse isn’t very hard to care for, but would not recommend others to get a horse because they are a big responsibility and you need to know what you are doing. Macola also shared a story where one time her horse lost his halter and she found it in the water trough.
Grebb has both horses and chickens. Grebb got her horse from the owner of the barn she was riding at. Her grandma gifted her family the chickens and she raised them from chicks. She has had her horse for about two years and the chickens for three. Grebb, just like Satthoff, had been riding horses for a while and in order to move up levels she needed her own horse, so she got Danny. Her brother really likes chickens, so that’s why her family decided to get some. “One time the chickens got out and flew over the fence, so [we] had to go around the neighborhood and try to catch them” Grebb said.
