This March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a time for celebration and commemoration of amazing women in history as seen in events all around Maryland.
What better way to host a celebration than during an “agora” also known as a “gathering place.” Well, The Ven at Embassy Row, Washington, D.C. is hosting their own agora, taking place Thursday March 6.
“Enjoy an evening out celebrating woman-owned small businesses, hearing from inspiring speakers, entrepreneurs + creatives in Washington, DC,” according to the International Women’s Day Agora. The event runs from 5-9 pm and is a well-structured night of celebration. Activities include: vendors, live painting, empowering talks, raffles and even Mediterranean food. Tickets cost $10 and a portion of the overall proceeds will go to a DC organization supporting low-income immigrants in DC, Maryland and Virginia.
However, maybe typical celebrations of food and raffles aren’t for everyone. But that’s no problem, International Women’s Day can be celebrated in a diverse amount of ways and for those more athletic, there are even runs to celebrate the day.
“This is a 1M, 5K, 10K, 13.1, 26.2 virtual run (or walk) to celebrate International Women’s Day. You choose which distance you want to complete” according to sponsor Humanitix.
The run can be completed anytime in March, with participants being able to choose their own course. This way the event can stay virtual and allow women all over the world to run together. Better yet, this run comes with a cause. The $22 registration fee (covering a medal and bib) will include a donation to the Dress For Success charity – a Maryland’s based charity that helps low-income women access professional clothes.
Still, running isn’t for everyone, sometimes coffee and conversations are all that’s needed for a good celebration. Well, on March 7 exactly that will be taking place at Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse from 5:30-8:30 PM in an event called the 3rd Annual International Women’s Day Soirée.
“Get ready to spark dynamic conversations, share groundbreaking ideas, and discover how you can accelerate progress in your own life and community” according to sponsors.
This night at Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse is all about working towards gender equality and change. With accomplished panelists such as Mary Ann Scully, and Brittany Young leading engaging discussions, and input from accomplished women, the night will be a time for hearing the voices of other powerful women moving towards change. This event even keeps up with the charity theme of the International Women’s Day celebrations by giving back some ticket proceeds to a charity supporting women and children in Baltimore.
International Women’s Day is such an important time to celebrate all of the amazing women that shaped the world we know today. So, don’t be afraid to show your support by attending the International Women’s Day events across Maryland.
“Let’s come together to amplify the voices of women in various fields and pave the way for a future where equality and innovation go hand in hand” Soirée sponsors said.
