The black box theater as SPHS has become a playground of creativity as the school’s improv troupe continues to captivate audiences with its quick wit, humor and energy.
This student-run group, known for their spontaneous and often unpredictable performances, has been on a roll in the school’s theater community, showcasing each members’ ability to think on their feet and entertain in real time.
Each performance is a one of a kind experience, as the troupe thrives on audience participation, turning everyday suggestions into comedic gold. The troupe’s improvisers are experts at transforming random prompts into hilarious scenes, and there’s never a dull moment. “We get to all be funny together, and it’s just a really great community that we have,” Tess Donegan a senior and the current vice president of the troupe.
The group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays during gold block and after school, where anyone can attend even if they aren’t in the troupe. They partake in various improv games and exercises that challenge their ability to think on their feet and perform well in front of a group. “My favorite part about being in the improv troupe is putting on shows for all my friends and family and my friends’ family, and really trying my best to impress them and make them laugh,” remarks Alexa Esposito a sophomore and member of the troupe.
Improv meetings are open to all grades and anybody who is interested in making new friends, learning improv techniques, or to just be a part of an awesome community. “My favorite part about being in the improv troupe is probably, just the community and being able to be around people that do the same thing that I do and do it well, and it’s always fun when, you get up on stage with them during the show, and you put something on that people like, that’s always really cool” Peyton Cozadd a junior and member of the troupe said.
The community and comedy of the SPHS improv troupe continues to bring a wonderful light into the black box theater and their next show will surely be just as entertaining as the rest.
