SPHS has dozens of classes with many different perks. However, one of the most popular parts of a class is going on field trips. Some classes don’t go on any field trips, but others go on many throughout the school year. One class with a lot of field trips is AVID. Students in this class learn skills to help prepare themselves for the future. AVID often takes field trips to colleges nearby so that students can discover what interests them in a college and explore colleges that they might wish to attend. “We went to Salisbury, it was really fun,” sophomore Kaylie Montagne said.
Other classes which help prepare students for their future are the courses at the Center of Applied Technology South (CAT-South). Classes at CAT-South allow students to gain experience in a trade that they might want to go into. Attending CAT-South is similar to going on a field trip on its own, as students have to take a half hour bus ride to reach it every day, but these courses come with multiple official field trips, as well. “We did a ghost tour in Baltimore (we went to restaurants that were famous for being haunted),” senior Laney Deaton said. “We went to Rome for a bit… We took a trip to the community college. It was fun.”
American Sign Language classes also went to a college: Gallaudet University, a college for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. “You go on a tour and everything. It was interesting to see how they have built-in accessibility features because most of the students are deaf… It’s very interesting,” senior Efi Prevezianos said.
