There are so many people who adopt cats, dogs, lizards, fish, bunnies, you name it, without the proper preparation needed.
Having the resources a new pet needs to get used to their environment is essential because it’s always extremely stressful for the animal.
For example, if someone were to adopt a new cat the first thing to do is figure out what type of cat they would want. If the adopter works from home, they might want a calm lap cat to sit with them throughout the day. If they have kids, they might want a higher energy cat to play with.
Adopting from breeders is an okay way to go about it, however there are so many animals in shelters that need help.
Of course if an adopter is allergic it might be better to get a dog or cat from a breeder instead.
Alright, once the adopter figures out what kind of pet would fit their lifestyle best, they can go to shelters and breeders until they find the perfect one for them.
When getting a new pet, specifically a dog or cat, it is best to keep them in a separate room that isn’t too big and a bit quieter than the rest of the house. This helps the animal get used to the family and all of the new changes in its environment.
No one wants a new 9 week old kitten to hide under the sofa for three days.
Each pet has different needs, a bearded dragon might not need to get to know the whole family and be played with every 10 minutes like a puppy.
The animal getting used to the family might take longer depending on the animal but once they seem comfortable, you can let them roam free.
Certain dogs need to be walked more than others. For example, an older dog with arthritis might only want to go up and down the street twice a day while a puppy might never calm down no matter how much you walk them, but again it depends, there are so many calm puppies and tons of active senior dogs.
Cats can be indoor or outdoor and that up to the adopter, if they live on a busy road or in an area with animals like coyotes it might be better to keep them inside.
I have two cats and they are both outdoors. We live in a good area for cats with a quiet road and a beach that we like to hang out at together. One cat is very adventurous and goes pretty far while the other stays close to home and waits for the other to come back.
However, before letting cats out, they should be taken to the vet to be vaccinated and microchipped. This goes for dogs too, microchipping them helps if they get lost because if someone were to find them and take them to the vet the vet could see who he/she belongs to.
The most important thing to remember is to make sure the animal gets the right amount of love and care based on their needs. Whether that’s sprinkling fish food in the bowl twice a dat or playing with a new kitten twenty times a day, just make sure you have the right amount of time for your pet.
