SkillsUSA is an organization run by the school with the purpose of preparing Severna Park students for leadership in the world of work. The Community Service committee under SkillsUSA has done charity projects such as making hero baskets for firefighters and tie blankets for Project Linus. But SkillsUSA does more for the school and the Severna Park community than just charity projects.

“The goal of Skills is definitely to help prepare children and kids for their life beyond the four walls of school,” sophomore  Adeline Faust said. SkillsUSA does professional development where they help kids prepare a resume, help with public speaking, and help kids understand what path they want to take in life, whether in the workforce or college.

A significant part of SkillsUSA is career and technical education and professional development.

“So career and technical education are any classes that could possibly prepare you for any future career that you might take,” Faust said.

These aspects of Skills can be seen in their most recent project, The career and technical education posters.

“Our goal was to inform everybody about the career and technical education classes that the school offers and also who’s in them. So they know what teachers teach them, what kids were in them, if they had questions to ask and so we created posters,” Faust said.

A variety of career and technical education classes are offered at Severna Park.

“One of the main career and technical education programs in our school is in the business hallway, like business and leadership, BIL, or any of the financial classes that we offer,” Faust said. Many career and technical education classes are offered at Severna Park.

However many kids do not take the career and technical education classes that are offered.

“When you think of Severna Park you think ‘oh we’re really good at our core classes and we really succeed there’ but I feel like a lot of kids aren’t taking the business classes because they just don’t know,” Faust said. The posters were created to counteract the lack of knowledge about the career and technical education classes offered at Severna Park. “We just wanted to highlight some students that are taking classes that can hopefully help their professional skills in the future,” Faust said.

These posters raise awareness about the career and technical education classes offered at Severna Park that will ultimately benefit students in the long run.
