The SPHS varsity field hockey team is having a successful season so far, with an undefeated record of 8-0. Led by Mallary Sellars, Megan Brannen and Rachel Lewis, the unstoppable offensive line and brick-wall defense have been working hard to achieve these wins.

Sellars began playing field hockey in second grade, and automatically loved the sport. As a center defender, Sellars focuses on speed and clearing the ball up to offense. “My favorite part about field hockey is how big the community is and how fast-paced and complex it is,” said Sellars. When she is not playing for SPHS, Sellars plays club field hockey for Storm Chasers. In May 2017, Sellars committed to Villanova University.

Brannen picked up the sport in fourth grade and enjoyed the competitiveness right away. Brannen plays midfield, which requires both speed and endurance. Brannen’s stick work is nearly impossible to defend, as she is known for her tricky pull-rights and dodges. “My favorite part about the game is that it is very intense, but at the same time it requires thoughtfulness and creativity,” said Brannen. Brannen plays club field hockey for SPark and is committed to Saint Joseph’s University.

Lewis has been playing field hockey for most of her life, starting in first grade. Lewis is a versatile athlete, playing midfield for SPHS and any position for her club team, WC Eagles. Lewis’ stick skills and speed help her send the ball to the circle and put it in the goal. Creativity is Lewis’ favorite component of the sport because there are numerous ways to get the ball down the field. “I committed to Old Dominion University in July 2016,” said Lewis.
