The Grizzlies defeated the Jazz 48-27 on Sunday to win the 2023 Severna Park Scrub Basketball Championship. The 1st seed Grizzlies were hot from the tip-off, taking an early 15-6 lead by the end of the first. Grizzlies player Gunner Foote can be attributed to this scoreline, scoring 8 of the Grizzlies’ 15. Throughout the second quarter, Jazz player Daniel Stack scored all of the Jazz’ 8 points, but it was not enough to slow down the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies outscored the Jazz again this quarter by a score of 14-8, with points coming from almost all players on the floor. By halftime, the score was 29-14 and things were looking good for the Grizzlies having a 15-point lead over the Jazz. The Jazz were going to need a big run to take the lead back in the third quarter.

By the time the second half started, the Jazz were ready to make their push for a comeback but the Grizzlies’ offense continued to be an unstoppable force. It was all the Jackson O’Brien show in the 3rd, scoring 8 points for the Grizzlies while making key defensive stops at the other end. The Grizzlies Defense held off the Jazz again this quarter to extend the lead to 16 at the end of the 3rd. By this point, the Jazz were going to need a miracle to come back from this deficit with only one quarter left to play.

The fourth quarter saw no change in dominance from the Grizzlies, scoring 11 points, four of which being free throws. Jackson O’Brien scored 3 more bringing his total points to 14, the leading scorer of the contest Gunner Foote got himself 4 points in the fourth, bringing his game total to 18. The Grizzlies’ scoring came from other sources throughout the game too, with Cody Phillips getting himself 9 and Eric Benner putting up 3. The Jazz were only able to score 6 in the fourth quarter, 3 coming from Daniel Stack to bring himself to a total of 13 points.

Despite the effort from Daniel Stack and The Jazz offense putting up a good fight throughout the game they ultimately could not contain the relentless scoring by Foote, Obrien, Phillips, and the rest of the Grizzlies roster. Congratulations to coach Fleisher and the Jazz for their impressive playoff run to the scrub finals and the Grizzlies for maintaining their record of 17-1 throughout the season and winning the 2023 Scrub Basketball Championship.
