Being an athlete at Severna Park is a challenging and rewarding experience on its own, and doing it back to back to back in the same school year is something that not many students hold the title of. The three sport Iron Falcon status can seemingly be an exhausting task, with no breaks in between sports and sometimes an overlap in seasons, leaving athletes with extremely minimal transition time. But these athletes don’t necessarily see this as a down side, better yet a way to continue to play and compete for Severna Park for as long as possible.
Senior Lizzy Thompson is a three sport athlete whose fall sport is golf, winter is basketball, and spring is lacrosse. Additionally, Thompson plans to continue her lacrosse career at University of Massachusetts Lowell. Thompson said, “I love it! It keeps me busy and on a strict schedule.”
Another Iron Falcon is Junior Izzy Burleson, “I play basketball, lacrosse, and soccer. I really like being around people and on a team, and I also like to stay busy…Most of the time the seasons overlap, but I enjoy it so it’s okay.”
When speaking to the three sport players, it becomes truly obvious that they self select into this type of in school lifestyle because it was their mind defaults to, busy and active always.
A common theme across the majority of these athletes is the importance of time management and putting an emphasis on allotting time towards school during the non stop sports schedule.
“I sometimes have time after practice,” said Burleson, “But mostly I have to find time in school or during breaks.” The ability to multi-task is an important skill that these athletes hold true and dear.
“I manage my time between the three sports by prioritizing my work before I go out. So I get my work done, and then I can have fun” said Junior Taylor Edwards.
Varsity soccer, basketball, and lacrosse player Senior Maria Bragg said, “I do it because I love and enjoy all three sports and have so much fun playing with some of my best friends all throughout the seasons. I also love being on a team and competing, and the team environment overall.”
All of these three sport athletes seem to have the best time in season, no matter the length of the season or where the team places at the end of the day, the goal is always to continue to push and love the hustle. And as a school and athletic community, Severna Park is beyond proud of the players who continuously rep the Severna Park logo and sweat for the goal to keep expanding the trophy case. “And it is always fun to be a part of something in our school community.”
