Many students believe that listening to music during school can help them focus more. While it can be seen as a tool to assist how students concentrate on their school work, the phone rules this year make it hard for students to utilize this. Majority of the student body believes that the opportunity to listen to music during class supports their learning.
“I think it helps me focus because it allows a calming environment that doesn’t always occur in a classroom setting,” Junior Ansley Godfrey said.
The opportunity to listen to music in class is not allowed anymore because of some people who might take advantage of it. While many would use their phones to help them direct their attention to their schoolwork, others could go on their phones and get very distracted. This is a pressing issue for teachers, being that many people would not stay attentive. And although that may be a good reason for this phone policy to be set in place, students having resources to be able to focus on their studies is also tremendously important.
When asked about the school rules on devices and listening to music in class, Godfrey said, “I don’t think it’s fair for the school to put those policies in place. People have different needs, and music helps many people focus.”
Evidently, students need more opportunities to make use of tools that work for them in the classroom. Using music as a way to stay focused in school could be a very useful aid for many.
“If you see a student with airpods who is completing their work sufficiently they should not be forced to remove what is helping them focus, especially if it does not disturb peers,” Junior Lyla Watson said.
