The SPHS symphonic band, orchestra, and choir had a winter performance on Wednesday December 17th in the auditorium. On Thursday December 18th percussion ensemble, jazz band and acapella had their winter concerts in the auditorium. They each played an assortment of holiday tunes and various other songs to get people in the holiday spirit. Some of the school’s ensembles also played on the last day before break for a special assembly to celebrate the winter season.
Each music class prepares for the concert all semester leading up to the concert by practicing each piece in class. “We have worked really hard during this month to perform such amazing songs for the audience. I think we’ll sound really good, “sophomore Rosie Melnychenko, flutist, said.
Students in these ensembles share what they like about being a member, including: meeting new people, growing as a musician, performing a show, and more. “I perform in our high school orchestra and jazz band. What’s really special about being a part of these groups is how incredibly rewarding it is to put together a piece of music. Being in the music program comes with something even better: community! Getting to come together with a common goal to make something beautiful (music) is a privilege like none other, “junior Warren Webb said.
The school’s Acapella group, SOL, not only performs a winter and spring concert, but also competes in acapella competitions. “I enjoy being a part of Sol because it lets me share my passion for singing with others and feels like a community that I can be myself in,” junior Isla Crawford said.
The winter concerts are a time where students in the music program can share what they have been working on with their community. It is the perfect way to grow closer with their peers and show family or friends what they have been working on as a holiday treat.
