The Severna Park Engineering Volunteers (SPEV) is a club created by Greg Pearson, a junior, that was created for the students of SPHS to help volunteer their time to the Severna Park community. The club works with VME Towson which is a humanitarian group that helps those with disabilities and elderly folks. The club’s goal, according to Pearson is to, “help as many people as possible with funding and support from the company.” Not only is this a great way to give back to your community, but it can also earn you learning service hours for graduation and it can give merits to specific Honors Societies. The club has already begun work on their first project, which is to help those who suffer from seizures. They are first working on a, “lava lamp to minimize seizures using visual stimuli,” Pearson said. They have also started work on a specific couple in Pasadena who has a three year old that suffers from seizures at night time. However, to fix this issue they are, “working on a bed frame that will help to keep the danger level down in case the child has a seizure that may cause him harm with a traditional crib or bed,” Pearson said. The work that this club will do can greatly affect the community in a way that might create a change for the better. However, without help from the students, the club will not be able to make a significant change. Currently, they are looking for more students to join the club, even offering officer roles for members to fill. Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, the club meets to collaborate on projects and share ideas for the future. If you’re looking for a new way to help out the community, consider joining The Severna Park Engineering Volunteers (SPEV) to make a positive change in Severna Park.
