On November 13th, SPHS French 3 and AP Spanish students, along with 15 other teams, came to AACC to participate in the World Language competition, winning the academic category for the second year in a row and coming in 3rd for the poster competition. The French team ultimately placed 3rd out of 17 overall in the full event, although the win in the academic competition is highly regarded, as it is one of the most challenging events with three categories: geography, culture, and language. In an impressive feat, the team missed only one question. This year’s theme, “Heartbeat of Humanity,” was left to the interpretation of teams on how to creatively tie it into projects that display francophone culture. The Severna Park French team incorporated the theme with people’s lives and with the beat of music, creating a poster themed as a theatre stage and t-shirts with musical notes saying, “Viva La Musique”. “I think they did very well, very proud of them, and I think they had a good time,” said French teacher Madame Auchincloss, regarding the French team’s performance at the competition. When looking forward to future competitions, Madame Auchincloss notes, “Each year it becomes harder and harder to become more creative,” due to the introduction of new themes and the growth of other teams. Yet, based on their previous performance and their play this year, there’s a lot to be proud of now for our French team.

SPHS French students worked together to explore this year’s theme of “Heartbeat of Humanity” and what it means culturally to them with colorful posters and t-shirts. Their creation for the poster competition won them third place overall and further adds to their awards from the event. That and the other, “posters will be displayed at the board of education in the upcoming weeks,” said French teacher Ms. Auchincloss, who supported them along their journey to the competition.
