Sydney Herz is senior at SPHS and is beginning her second year as Editor-in-Chief of the Talon Newspaper. She has been on staff for three years and enjoys writing all types of articles, but sports and news specifically. When not in school or writing for the Talon, Herz enjoys spending as much time as possible outside in nature, with her family or with her dog. Herz also loves to watch any sport that is in season, especially baseball, which her twin brother Luke plays. After high school, Herz plans to attend college and hopefully travel the world and explore new places and cultures.

Being identical twins, Scott and Tyler Engleman have grown up side-by-side. They have been in classes together, as well as sports. This year they are even on the same track and field team. Separating next year will give each of them the ability to discover their identity without being asked which brother they are. ¨My whole life its been that people meet me as a twin,¨ Tyler Engleman said. ¨But now when I meet people theyll have no idea and kind of just know me as an individual.¨

Ashley Falk has been a part of the theater community for many years before she entered Severna Park High School. Now as lighting director, Falk has gained a lot of responsibility and joy out of having a leadership role in each production, one in which she hopes to hand over to another young student when she graduates. “I would recommend [that] anyone after me should not be afraid to take charge,” Falk said. “There needs to be a leader in the department and it really helps everything to run smoothly.”

SPHS senior Gus Bachmann has been participating in soccer for over a decade. Over the course of this time, he has crossed paths with many who made a lasting impact on him and aided in his development as a player and a person. “I’d really like to thank my teammates for making these last four years of high school soccer such a great time,” Bachmann said. “I’d also like to show appreciation for Coach Ryan Parsi, who has always been a kind mentor to me in soccer, as well as [in] life.”

During Covid and virtual classes, many students could roll out of bed five minutes before class began. This year, though, the only thing getting seniors to come to school is the fear of missing valuable information in one day of their AP classes. “Calculus is the reason I slug out of bed in the morning,” senior Jackson Miller-Lyman said.

Seniors have the opportunity to leave school early in order to earn credits from AACC classes, partake in an internship, make some money or participate in a sport. With a shortened schedule, senior Paige Savani feels she is remaining productive and getting just as much done as if she remained at school for the entire school day, while still having fun. “Leaving school early definitely has its benefits like being able to work longer shifts and take college classes during the day so you are done when a normal school schedule would be ending,” Savani said. When I leave school, I almost never go home, I either go to work, AACC classes or I get breakfast with my friends.

In 2020, schools all over the world were shut down due to COVID-19 and students weren’t able to go to school or visit the schools they had hoped to attend after they graduated high school. This year, seniors are doing their best to make their final decisions for their futures. “2020 had an impact on travel and I was unable to go on as many [college] visits as I would have liked,” senior Zach Plummer said. “But hopefully I can be able to do that in 2021 so that I can make the best possible decision for my future.”

Along her journey, Symmes has met countless amazing people who have inspired and motivated her to keep writing for others, and that is what she plans on doing in her future. Not only does Symmes enjoy assisting those struggling now, but she hopes to make a career out of it someday. “I plan to become a psych major in college and work with adolescent eating disorders and trauma therapy,” Symmes said.

Junior Trey Smack joined the SPHS varsity football team as their starting kicker his sophomore year. Since then, he has been nationally ranked for his outstanding performance on the field. “If I got beat out by a girl then she’s a good kicker and deserves it,” Smack said. “Advice I would give to a girl who were to try out [would be that] you should be proud to be a Falcon and we will treat you like every other person.”

Members and directors of the organization have seen tremendous support from the community in support for these women. “We really believe that when you can reach a woman, it affects the entire community because it trickles down into her children and makes a much larger impact,” director Erin Allison said.

In past years, residents and students from Severna Park have travelled to other states to see family or had family come visit to share the special holiday together. However, with Covid-19 still prevalent and dangerous, families have created new ways to have fun and interact with their families on Zoom or Facetime calls while still keeping everyone safe. “This year we are taking precautions and we won’t be able to see family for Thanksgiving,” sophomore Ally Weaver said.

Opening on September 11, 2020, the Gold Star Family Memorial final product has fulfilled the initial vision beyond imagination by honoring the men who lost their lives while fighting for our freedom. The entire memorial was built and created through the love and support of the Severna Park community and volunteers putting in their time and helping hands to bring this structure to life. “The community came together and supported this project beyond our wildest dreams,” Chisholm said. “Contributions were coming in at an amazing rate and volunteers were helping in so many ways.”

Opening their doors less than three months prior to the unprecedented pandemic, Sullivan’s Cove in Severna Park had to act quickly and efficiently in order to keep their business flowing. While still continuing their original inspiration for the restaurant, Eric Leatherman and Sean Martin, business partners and restaurant entrepreneurs, have had their limits tested. But through it all, Sullivan’s Cove’s staff is doing the best they can to remain optimistic about the future. “Curbside and carryout has helped and kept us floating, so we are still in business,” co-owner Sean Martin said. “The big question is time. Time is not on our side right now, but thankfully we’ll make it.”

Maintaining A Restaurant’s Vision by Adapting with New Changes

Mental health in schools has become more prevalent over the years. In 2019 the Our Minds Matter Movement was founded by students to help make mental health resources in and out of school accessible for students. SPHS sophomore Cooper Powell has participated in the movement for a while now and has seen how much change and progress it has created in the community and in himself. “This organization has made many people who live here, including myself, feel more comfortable when discussing mental health and personal struggles,” Powell said.

Before all these new shows and movies came out, people would see what was live on tv or go to a movie with a friend. Today there’s a new reality. Online streaming services have become increasingly popular and it can be difficult to decide which one is best to spend your money on for you and your family. “You have to find the one that has a lot of pros and not a lot of cons” said senior Jake Powell who personally enjoys Netflix over the other services.

In the past, students have learned about major turning points or epidemics such as the Black Plague, Spanish Flu, and 9/11. Today, the Coronavirus has sparked up similar reactions and efforts as these past events while the world is in isolation. “Once this is over we will never take another day for granted and will live everyday to the fullest” senior Parker Cross said, “We will cherish our time with our friends, family, and coworkers and will learn to celebrate life.”
